Physical Characteristics

Sow bugs are small, moisture-loving pests that measure about 1.5 cm in length.

  • Color: Dark grey or slate-colored

  • Body: Flat and oval-shaped with a rigid, segmented exoskeleton

  • Limbs: 14 jointed legs

  • Antennae: Present

  • Wings: None

  • Distinct Feature: Two tail-like appendages at the rear of the body

Habitat and Environmental Preferences

Sow bugs prefer cool, dark, and moist environments and are commonly found:

  • Under rocks and stones

  • Beneath leaves and organic debris

  • Around wood piles and garden mulch

They require high humidity to survive. Without adequate moisture, their lifespan is significantly reduced.
