Earwigs

Facts, Habits, and Garden Impact

Earwigs are small insects measuring 14–23 mm in length. They are dark brown and have forceps at the hind end. These forceps are curved in males and straight in females. Don’t worry—they are not poisonous and can only give a minor nip if handled.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Female earwigs lay about 40 eggs per year and are unusual among insects because they care for their young after laying the eggs. This maternal behavior is rare in the insect world.

Feeding Habits and Impact

Earwigs primarily feed on green vegetation and other plants, making them more of a garden nuisance than a household pest. While they can occasionally wander indoors, they generally prefer outdoor environments.
